Relevant?

There's a debate at the Cambridge Union this evening on the motion 'classical music is irrelevant to young people'. Well, I guess that's true for the majority of young people who don't like serious music: most people, let alone young people, don't like the serious arts, whether we consider the fine arts, literature or music.

But the conservatories (and university music departments) are full of young people studying music. The audience for the Proms seems as young as ever. I doubt whether much has changed and any attempts to make serious music more popular by re-packaging it won't have much effect. There will always be those devoted to value-added, multi-layered, and challenging pastimes - and there will always be a majority which isn't.
